Things worth mentioning…

• Robbie Ray got the start and put together… an incredibly Robbie Ray start. There were points where Ray looked completely unhittable, throwing a hard slider that had the Yankees looking totally lost at the plate. But Ray also had a rough time with command, resulting in his pitch count climbing fairly quickly. Ray would end up going four innings allowing just one earned run on three hits and four walks while striking out five. It was a bit of a wild ride, but you can’t complain about getting four innings of one-run ball from Ray at this point.

• Ray’s line could have looked a lot worse. He came out for the fifth inning and allowed two runners to reach, resulting in Charlie Montoyo bringing in A.J. Cole. Cole promptly walked one guy to load the bases with nobody out, giving the Yankees a prime chance to bring themselves back into the game. But Cole struck out Giancarlo Stanton and then got Luke Voit and Gleyber Torres to finish the inning. It was like this year’s version of the Brett Cecil inning against the Yankees from 2015. The Jays ended up winning 14-1, but if not for Cole’s huge inning, that result could have looked a lot different.
• There were a lot of good performances at the plate on Wednesday, obviously, but a couple that stand out were Vlad Jr. and Danny Jansen. Vlad came up with an RBI single in the first inning to get things going and a clutch RBI double in the third inning to add to the early lead. And then there was Danny Jansen, who has definitely been reading everyone’s PLAY KIRK takes. Jansen went four-for-four with two homers, a double, a single, and three runs driven in. That’s a huge response from Jansen to Kirk’s big game on Monday.

• With the win, the Blue Jays’ magic number is now one. If they win tomorrow, they’ve clinched a playoff spot. With Hyun Jin Ryu on the mound, it looks like the prefect time to punch the ticket.
