The Blue Jays have given their skipper a vote of confidence.

The team announced on Friday that manager Charlie Montoyo’s contract has been extended through the 2023 season with two different club options for the 2024 and 2025 seasons. Montoyo’s deal was set to expire after the 2022 season, so this is a one-year guaranteed extension.

As I said in the headline, this really comes as no surprise. The Blue Jays are going for it this season and they’re avoiding having a lame-duck manager cloud loom over their heads as it could potentially have become a distraction.

But, but, but, but Charlie used this one mediocre reliever in a late-May game instead of this other mediocre reliever that I liked better and the team ended up blowing the game and then they missed the playoffs by one game and it was his fault!!! No, good lord, relax.

While Charlie does have his eye-roll moments, such as trying really hard to make bunting still a thing, he’s ultimately done a very good job in helping the Blue Jays navigate a pair of very difficult seasons in back-to-back years. The team has built a very positive culture in which players are very clearly happy to be playing here, and Charlie deserves credit for being a part of that process.
