You just have to love rumour season.
On Thursday afternoon, ESPN’s Jeff Passan reported that Juan Soto hadn’t agreed to any contract and that the “Soto to the Boston Red Sox” rumour was made up.
That rumour stemmed from a Twitter user with the handle “BeyondAvgMick”. On Thursday, he reported that Soto is signing with the Red Sox. While the individual isn’t a well-known insider by any means, these types of individuals break news all the time, but it should always be taken with a grain of salt.
That begs the question, how credible is Mick? Well, Mick “reported” that the Boston Bruins were going to fire head coach Jim Montgomery on November 19 just before noon. Later in the day, Montgomery was officially fired.
Even if this isn’t dumb luck, just because an individual has sources in one sport, doesn’t mean they have them in another sport. And let me tell you as a hockey writer myself, it was obvious Montgomery was getting the axe sooner rather than later.
However, there are some rather credible reports surrounding Soto and the Red Sox. Just minutes before Jeff Passan’s tweet, Mike Rodriguez reported that the Red Sox offered a 12-year deal worth $50 million a season.
Another conflicting report came from Héctor Gómez, who reported that the offer on the table was a 13-year, $625 million deal, which would have an annual value of just over $48 million.

I'm hearing a 13-year, $625 million offer.

I just finished a call, and sources from #Boston informed me that the player spoke for over an hour with Rafael Devers about the team. There is a 12-year offer for around $50M per season, and #JuanSoto is interested in the idea of going to the Red Sox. Currently, the Red Sox are

If anything, this situation reminds me and many other Blue Jays fans of the situation last season regarding Shohei Ohtani and the Blue Jays. An individual reported that the two-way superstar was signing with Toronto, while Jon Morosi reported that Ohtani was on a plane to the city. It turned out neither of these things were true, as Ohtani signed with the Dodgers and it was actually Robert Herjavec on the plane. A lot less exciting.
Soto is this off-season’s top free agent. Last season with the Yankees, he slashed .288/.419/.569 with 41 home runs in 713 plate appearances, with a higher BB% (18.1%) than K% (16.7%) to give him a 180 wRC+ and an 8.1 fWAR.
He’s been linked to the Blue Jays, Red Sox, Los Angeles Dodgers, and the two New York teams, with the New York Mets being the favourite to land the 26-year-old. It’s believed that Soto will sign before the end of the Winter Meetings.
