Before Friday night’s series opener against the New York Yankees, the Toronto Blue Jays made a flurry of roster moves.
The Blue Jays activated Spencer Arrighetti off the 15-day injured list, and he is set to be active for tonight’s contest.
Arrighetti, who the Blue Jays acquired from the Houston Astros in exchange for Daulton Varsho at the trade deadline, has been on the injured list since July 25 due to right foot nerve irritation, which was later diagnosed as Morton’s neuroma.
Expected to work as a bulk reliever tonight, Arrighetti has pitched in 17 games with the Astros this season and has gone 7-5 with a 4.60 ERA and a 1.34 WHIP. The 26-year-old has struck out 87 batters across his 88 innings pitched and held opponents to a .215 average.
Davis Schneider is back for another stint with the Blue Jays. The 27-year-old is now in his fourth stint with the Blue Jays this season, and across 61 games, Schneider is batting .142 with three home runs and 12 RBIs.
Schneider has reached base at a .295 clip this season and with two left-handers in Ryan Weathers and Carlos Rodon starting this weekend for the Yankees, he has the opportunity to start in critical games for the Blue Jays.
Left-hander Brendan Cellucci was optioned to Triple-A to make room for Arrighetti. Cellucci was selected to the Blue Jays’ roster on Wednesday, but did not pitch for the big-league club.
In 40 games this season with both Triple-A Buffalo and Double-A New Hampshire, Cellucci is 6-2 with a 3.55 ERA and a 1.34 WHIP. The 28-year-old has struck out 48 batters across his 45.2 innings this season.
To clear a spot for Schneider, Josh Smith was placed on the 10-day IL with left hamstring inflammation. Acquired at the trade deadline from the Texas Rangers in exchange for left-hander Adam Macko, Smith has played in 14 games with the Blue Jays and is batting .250 with two home runs and three RBIs.
For the season between both the Rangers and Blue Jays, Smith has appeared in 59 games and is batting .220 with three home runs, 11 RBIs and a .303 on-base percentage. Smith originally suffered the injury during Wednesday night’s 7-6 loss against the Tampa Bay Rays.
