Another day, another loss for the Glendale Desert Dogs.
On Tuesday afternoon, the Desert Dogs and Toronto Blue Jays’ prospects fell 11-6 to the Mesa Solar Sox, moving to 4-12 for the season. Four different Blue Jays’ prospects played in this Arizona Fall League game.
As has been the case for most of the season, Josh Kasevich made the start, batting fifth in the lineup. Alex Amalfi made the start on the pitching side of things, while both Kai Peterson and Chay Yeager pitched out of the bullpen.
Kasevich’s first plate appearance came in the top of the second, where he led off with a groundout. His next opportunity in the top of the fourth resulted in another groundout, this time a force out as Kasevich made it to first base. He was eventually stranded at second.
In the sixth, Kasevich grounded out for the third time in the game before drawing a lead-off walk to begin the eighth. The shortstop stole second base and eventually came in to score the Desert Dogs’ fourth run of the game. In his final plate appearance in the top of the ninth, Kasevich struck out swinging to go 0-4 with a walk and a strikeout.
Starting the game for the Desert Dogs was Amalfi, and it didn’t go great for the 24-year-old. He threw a scoreless first inning, allowing a single and a walk, balking the runners to second and third, but got out of it unscathed. The same cannot be said for the bottom of the second, as he allowed a lead-off double, gave up two walks, and was eventually tagged for four runs in the inning. Amalfi was pulled after an inning and two-thirds.
Peterson was the fourth reliever out of the bullpen, and he had a tough game as well. He got a groundout to begin the bottom of the sixth, but allowed a walk, then a triple for an earned run. A groundout drove in another run, and after hitting a batter with a pitch, the left-handed reliever was pulled. The runner he was responsible for came in to score.
Yeager also allowed three runs. Tommy White hit a single, Owen Ayers drew a walk, and Cole Mathis drove in all three runs with one swing of the bat to give the Solar Sox a 10-0 lead at that point. Yeager gave up a single and a walk, but got out of the inning with two groundouts, one being a double play ball.
Diving deeper into the stats, all three of Kasevich’s balls in play registered an exit velocity of 100 mph or harder. His hardest hit ball was his groundout in the second innings, coming off the bat at 103 mph. The fourth inning groundout had an exit velocity of 100.9, while his sixth inning groundout had an exit velocity of 101.1 mph. He’s had some encouraging exit velocities in the past week.
Amalfi threw 59 pitches, 39 of which were fastballs. The heater averaged 93.2 mph and generated one whiff on 17 total swings. Amalfi also threw 12 curveballs, six sliders, and two changeups.
Peterson threw 17 fastballs and nine sliders, generating one whiff on nine total swings. The left-handed reliever’s fastball averaged about 92 mph. Yeager threw mainly fastballs, with 18 of his 23 pitches being heat. It averaged 96.2 mph, while his five cutters averaged 90.4 mph. Like Peterson, he generated on whiff on nine total swings.
