The Glendale Desert Dogs have split their last two games in Arizona Fall League action.
On Wednesday, they defeated the Mesa Solar Sox by a score of 6-4 to move to 5-12 this season. Unfortunately, that was answered with a loss on Thursday, as they fell 10-5 to the Scottsdale Scorpions to move to 5-13.
Let’s take a look at how these two games went.

Wednesday’s game

Starting with Wednesday’s win, two Toronto Blue Jays’ prospects participated in this game: Infielder Cutter Coffey and pitcher Kelena Sauer. Coffey’s first plate appearance came in the bottom of the second, as he flew out to centre field. In the bottom of the fourth, he walked to put two runners on, later coming in to score on a wild pitch.
That was the last time Coffey was on base. In the bottom of the fifth, he hit a fly out to centre field with a runner on second, and the runner was thrown out trying to advance to third. This was Coffey’s final plate appearance of the game, as the game only went seven innings.
Sauer pitched in the fourth inning. The first batter he faced, Tommy White, hit a lead-off single. He got the next batter to strike out, but a triple was hit to score a run, and then a sacrifice fly to score a second one. Sauer got a lineout to end the inning.
Diving deeper into the stats, Coffey only put two balls in play. His flyout in the second inning came off the bat at 93.8 mph, while the flyout that led to a double play came off that bat at 76.8 mph.
Sauer threw 11 four-seam fastballs, with the pitch averaging 90.1 mph. It also generated one whiff on seven total swings. His changeup was the only other pitch to generate a whiff, doing so on two total swings. Overall, Sauer had a 15 whiff%

Thursday’s game

Two Blue Jays’ prospects were involved in the Desert Dogs’ 10-5 loss on Wednesday: Josh Kasevich and Edward Duran. Kasevich batted clean up, while Duran batted eighth.
In the first inning, Kasevich hit a single but was stranded on first. The next inning saw Duran hit his third triple of the season, which is impressive because he’s a catcher. He scored thanks to a Patrick Clohisy single.
Leading off the top of the third was Kasevich, who lined out to right in a quiet inning for the Desert Dogs. Duran then led off the top of the fourth, hitting into a groundout. Kasevich led off the fifth inning, popping out for the Desert Dogs’ first out of the inning.
Duran was the second batter up in the sixth inning, striking out swinging in what was another quiet inning for the Desert Dogs. The next time up for Kasevich resulted in a single, but he was stranded at second.
Both Blue Jays’ prospects received one more plate appearance, with Duran flying out to end the eighth inning and Kasevich striking out to end the game.
Diving deeper into the stats, Kasevich continued his recent trend of smacking the ball. His first inning single had an exit velocity of 106.9 mph, the fourth-hardest hit ball of the game. Kasevich’s other single had an exit velocity of 100.6 mph, while his lineout had an exit velocity of 97.7 mph; all are considered hard-hit balls. The shortstop’s pop out had an exit velocity of 84.9 mph.
Duran put three balls in play. His triple had an exit velocity of 101 mph, and the catcher’s eighth-inning flyout had an exit velocity of 97.7 mph. However, his fourth-inning grounder had an exit velocity of 61.1 mph.
The Desert Dogs’ next game is at 4:30 PM ET on Friday, where they’ll host the Peoria Javelinas.
