The Toronto Blue Jays announced on Wednesday that they have claimed relief pitcher Matt Waldron off waivers from the San Diego Padres. As a result, left-handed pitcher Patrick Corbin was transferred to the 60-day injured list after he suffered a left teres major strain.
Through 10 games (three starts) this season, Waldron was 1-2 with a 7.16 ERA and a 1.56 WHIP. The right-hander struck out 28 batters across 32.2 innings pitched and allowed an opponents’ average of .319. Waldron, 29, has spent the last three seasons with the Padres and recorded a 5.19 ERA across 225.1 innings. Waldron was initially a starting pitcher, making 26 starts for the Padres in 2024, before moving to the bullpen in bulk relief.
Waldron is the only knuckleball pitcher left in MLB, using it as his primary pitch in addition to his fastball, sinker and sweeper, he was designated for assignment by the Padres on July 29 after posting a 7.16 ERA in 10 games out of the bullpen for San Diego.
Waldron is set to report to the Blue Jays and be available out of the bullpen as they travel to Chicago and then Philadelphia later this weekend.
Through 19 games (15 starts) this season, Corbin has gone 3-4 with a 5.51 ERA and a 1.54 WHIP. The left-hander has struck out 63 batters across 80 innings and has allowed an opponents’ average of .302. Originally signed to a one-year contract on April 3, Corbin filled an important role for the Blue Jays as they dealt with early-season injuries to their rotation.
Unfortunately for Corbin, he compiled an 0-3 record, an 8.69 ERA and a 2.03 WHIP over June, before turning in an 8.18 ERA over four outings in July while working out of the bullpen. With the Blue Jays falling out of contention, Corbin may not return this season as the club looks to give opportunities to younger arms.
