Patrick Corbin is headed to the Toronto Blue Jays’ bullpen, effective immediately.
The club has scratched Corbin from his projected start on Canada Day (Wednesday) and will move to a reliever role moving forward, manager John Schneider revealed on Tuesday. He’ll be available out of the ‘pen right away, but he won’t be able to cover his regular starter’s workload, as this move comes a day before he was supposed to start.
For now, Wednesday’s starter is currently “TBD,” per Schneider. One way or another, though, it’ll include Spencer Miles again — just as many previous bullpen days have.
The Blue Jays will wait until after Tuesday’s contest against the New York Mets to announce Wednesday’s starter. It could be Miles or an opener — such as Braydon Fisher or Mason Fluharty. But that’ll depend on which relievers are available for the series finale.
Removing Corbin from the rotation comes on the heels of an extremely rough June for the veteran southpaw, who owns an inflated 8.69 ERA and 5.95 FIP with almost as many walks (10) as strikeouts (16) issued in five starts (19.2 innings) this month. During that span, he completed five innings just once, failing to make it through four frames in three of those outings.
“He gets it, he’s done that before, he kind of understands [it],” Schneider said upon informing Corbin of moving to the bullpen. “Going back to when he got here, he’s been really good for us, been valuable for us.“Probably best for him, best for us, after the last two or three starts, to where all right, let’s try something a little different.”
Not even a month ago, Miles had been backfiling Toronto’s depleted rotation, making a pair of starts alongside a handful of bulk-type appearances. But he hasn’t been needed in that kind of role since early June. Now, they’ll be asking him to address a similar need — potentially through these next few weeks leading up to the All-Star break.
It’ll need to be a gradual build back to the 75-80 pitch range, but Miles will be able to offer around 50 pitches when he takes the hill on Wednesday, either as a starter or multi-inning reliever. The club still wants to be cautious with his workload, which has already approached 51 innings this season — a big jump from his previous total of 14.2 frames in pro ball.
But they feel this plan will allow them to kick the can of their fifth starter’s spot down the road until they return from the break in mid-July. With a pair of off days coming up, both landing on Thursdays next month, that should be fairly doable.
At that point, the Blue Jays will reassess their starting rotation depth, and, when that time comes, may include a healthy Max Scherzer — he’ll need to make at least two Triple-A rehab starts after throwing a bullpen on Wednesday — and even Jake Bloss.
Furthermore, we’ll be even closer to the Aug. 3 trade deadline by then, adding further intrigue around this team’s fifth starter plans.
As for Corbin, transitioning to the bullpen isn’t a new experience for him. Granted, the 36-year-0ld only made one relief appearance with the Texas Rangers last season, but he split time as a reliever back during his Arizona Diamondback days a decade ago. This move also provides the Blue Jays with a third lefty in the ‘pen, alongside Mason Fluharty and Adam Macko.
