A former Toronto Blue Jays prospect has already found a new home.
On June 9th, the Jays released Riley Tirotta, a utility player that spent parts of six seasons in the organization after being selected in 2021. After just one week week, he signed a minor league contract with the Philadelphia Phillies.
Tirotta joined the Phillies’ Double-A team and has played four games since signing, notching his first hit in the organization on Saturday evening and scoring two runs. He also drove in his first run in the organization on Friday, giving him a slash line of .077/.200/.154 since joining the National League organization.
The Dayton alumni had a tough start to his 2026 season in the Blue Jays organization, slashing just .193/.298/.363 with seven home runs and a 30.3 K% in 198 plate appearances with the Triple-A Buffalo Bisons. It’s a shame, because back-to-back strong seasons paired with versatility positioned him to be a potential call-up this season.
His breakout season was in 2024, slashing .247/.385/.433 with 15 home runs in 444 plate appearances. Most of his 2024 season was spent with the Bisons, where he slashed .240/.360/.425 with 12 home runs in 342 plate appearances. He followed that up with a strong 2025 season, where Tirotta slashed .268/.359/.417 with 12 home runs in 463 plate appearances, all with the Bisons.
The 27-year-old has always had a relatively high strikeout rate, never finishing a season with a K% below 27%. However, he’s shown he can play all over the field, mainly playing at first base and right field in 2026. In years past, he played third base, second base, left field (where he’s played to begin his Phillies tenure), and even limited appearances at shortstop.
It may not have worked out in the Blue Jays’ organization, but it’s good to see Tirotta at least get another opportunity elsewhere.
