The Toronto Blue Jays’ 2026 season ended in a place that not many expected.
A year after falling in Game 7 of the World Series to the Los Angeles Dodgers, the Blue Jays finished 79-83, and will spend the duration of the 2026 postseason watching from home.
As the playoffs roll on, the Blue Jays’ focus has shifted to the offseason and how they can improve the club to set themselves up for more success in 2027.
While the Blue Jays will be banking on better years from a few of the incumbents on their roster, the free agent market will certainly play a role in helping add to a team that finished with the fewest runs and home runs in Major League Baseball.
One player who the Blue Jays could look to add to help solve some of their offensive issues is outfielder Randy Arozarena. In a weak free agent class, Arozarena represents one of the few players who could step in and be an impact on the offensive side of the ball.
Arozarena wrapped up his second full season with the Seattle Mariners in 2026 and across 154 games, he batted .281 with 26 home runs and 79 RBIs. Arozarena reached base at a .381 clip and his slugging percentage of .484 tied for first among all Mariners players with Dominic Canzone.
In a year that was difficult at the plate for the Blue Jays, Arozarena would instantly provide a boost to a lineup that is in desperate need of improvement. Arozarena’s 2026 numbers would have put him first in average and OBP, second in both home runs, RBIs, and slugging among all qualified Blue Jays.
Arozarena would instantly provide a speed element that the Blue Jays deeply lacked last season. The 31-year-old stole 26 bases in 34 attempts and has reached the 20-steal plateau in each of the past six seasons. The only Blue Jay who remains under contract heading into the 2027 season who had more than seven steals was Andrés Giménez, who finished with 20.
Heading into the 2027 campaign, the Blue Jays outfield consists of Brett Bateman, Nathan Lukes, Myles Straw, Davis Schneider, Addison Barger, and Anthony Santander. Whether it’s health, contract status, or ability to succeed at the highest level, many of these players come with question marks, which makes Arozarena’s fit in left field almost seamless in Toronto.
Arozarena is likely to receive the $23.15-million qualifying offer from the Mariners, meaning the Blue Jays will lose a draft pick if that scenario plays out as projected. In a win-now window, the draft pick shouldn’t deter the Blue Jays from making an effort to add Arozarena to their roster.
The Mariners and Arozarena settled on a one-year, $15.65-million contract in January for the 2026 season, so he will likely be trying to secure a deal that falls in the $20 million-to-$25-million range with the term being around four or five years.
As the Blue Jays look to try and prove 2026 was just an aberration, the addition of Arozarena would be a great start in providing another high-end bat to their lineup.
