Tuesday’s game didn’t go to plan.

The Toronto Blue Jays were in tough against Gavin Williams, striking out 13 times over seven innings of work. Somehow, they found a way to take the lead in the top of the fifth thanks to an error by catcher Patrick Bailey, as well as a wild pitch. But Bailey made up for it in the bottom of the fifth, hitting a two-run shot to give the Guardians a 2-1 lead. They never relinquished it, hitting two run home runs in the seventh and eighth for an 8-1 victory.

Spencer Miles and Ricky Tiedemann each pitchers a scoreless innings, but Spencer Arrighetti, Joe Mantiply, and Michael Lorenzen each gave up two earned runs in their outing. The good news for the Blue Jays is that Wednesday’s game won’t be a bullpen day. Even better news is that Dylan Cease is set to start.

The Cy Young candidate has been fantastic for the past two months, posting a minuscule 1.48 ERA and 2.53 FIP in 67 innings over 10 starts. This late in the season, only he and New York Yankees’ ace Cam Schlittler are candidates to win the award.

Left-handed pitcher Joey Cantillo is set to start for the Guardians. The southpaw has a 3.70 ERA over 136.1 innings of work this season, with a 24.6 K% and 11.9 BB%. He faced the Blue Jays on April 25th, giving up three runs (one earned) over five innings of work.

Despite a lefty on the mound, the Blue Jays have a fair-share of left-handed batters in the lineup. Brett Bateman leads off, Nathan Lukes bats sixth, and Andrés Giménez bats eighth.

Kazuma Okamoto is the lone Blue Jay in the lineup to go deep of Cantillo, and he’s batting fifth. Batting before him is Alejandro Kirk, who is shifting down from the two-hole, now filled by George Springer. Rounding out the rest of the lineup, Vladimir Guerrero Jr. bats third, Ernie Clement bats seventh, and Myles Straw bats ninth.

The Blue Jays are in must-win territory now, stting two and a half games behind the Guardians for the final wild card spot. A win here gives them an opportunity of leaving Ohio trailing the Guardians by just a half game.
