The Toronto Blue Jays are looking to make it two wins in a row against the New York Mets on Tuesday night at Rogers Centre.
Monday’s series opener saw the Blue Jays snap their six-game losing streak, taking down the Mets 2-1, and improving their record to 40-45 through 85 games. While the offence still only mustered four hits, Trey Yesavage limited the Mets to one run over 6.2 innings, and the bullpen took care of the rest to give the Blue Jays their first victory since June 22.
Looking to make it two wins in a row, the Blue Jays will hand the ball to right-hander Kevin Gausman. Through 17 starts this season, Gausman is 4-6 with a 4.36 ERA and a 1.19 WHIP, but has run into difficulties over his past two outings.
In his last two starts against the Chicago Cubs and Texas Rangers, Gausman has allowed 13 runs on 17 hits across eight innings pitched. The struggles are so stunning because, since joining the Blue Jays before the 2022 season, Gausman has rarely put together back-to-back outings that have been as difficult as the past two.
The Mets counter with 24-year-old Nolan McLean. After taking the league by storm last season when McLean posted a 5-1 record with a 2.06 ERA, the right-hander has taken a slight step back this season.
Through 16 games, McLean is 4-5 with a 4.03 ERA and 1.12 WHIP. While still incredibly difficult to hit, highlighted by his .204 average against, McLean has worked himself into trouble due to the free passes. McLean has walked at least two batters in seven of his past eight outings, but it should be noted that he has struck out 106 batters over his 89.1 innings, the 15th most in MLB.
Blue Jays’ 14th-ranked prospect per MLB Pipeline, Sean Keys, is set to make his second career MLB start. Keys debuted on June 27 during a 7-4 loss against the Texas Rangers and picked up his first career MLB hit with a single to right field. Slotted into the fourth spot in the batting order on Tuesday, manager John Schneider is hoping Keys can flash the power he’s showcased in the minor leagues with 21 home runs across two levels.
