Just six games remain to determine the Toronto Blue Jays‘ fate.
After Sunday’s 8-5 victory over the Kansas City Royals, the Blue Jays officially punched their ticket to the postseason, the fourth time in the past six seasons. However, their sights are set for bigger things, as they’re currently in the driver’s seat to finish with the best record in the American League. All it would take is a 4-2 record over the remaining six games.
This season, the Blue Jays have a 50-25 record at Rogers Centre and return home to host the Boston Red Sox for three games and the Tampa Bay Rays for three games. The Red Sox are also in the hunt for a postseason berth, so they’ll play with some desperation over the course of this series.
Starting for the Blue Jays is Kevin Gausman, who pitched six innings of one-run ball in his last start. His last time at home, Gausman gave up just two hits and a walk in nine shutout innings. Since June 26th, Gausman has a 2.30 ERA and 3.18 FIP in 97.2 innings pitched; he’ll be their Game 1 starter. Starting for the Red Sox is Lucas Giolito, who has a 3.46 ERA in 140.1 innings pitched this season.
Before the game, the Blue Jays activated Anthony Santander, who’ll be available off the bench. but that didn’t happen before Tuesday’s game. George Springer leads off, followed by Daulton Varsho and Vladimir Guerrero Jr. Addison Barger bats cleanup, followed by Alejandro Kirk and Nathan Lukes. The Blue Jays’ bottom third is comprised of Davis Schneider, Andrés Giménez, and Ernie Clement.
A win here would drop the Blue Jays’ magic number to three games, no matter what the New York Yankees do in their game against the Chicago White Sox. If the White Sox can pull out a win and the Jays win their game, their magic number drops to two games.
Let’s set up Tuesday evening’s game!
