The Toronto Blue Jays will look to continue their winning ways on the road tonight when they face the St. Louis Cardinals for the second night in a row. The club pulled off a dramatic win last night late in extra’s, with Alejandro Kirk and Jonatan Clase playing hero late in the game.
The Jays will be sending right-hander Chris Bassitt to the mound, with the veteran arm making his 14th start of the season.
Bassitt owns an impressive 3.56 ERA and a 3.44 FIP through 73 1/3 innings. The Jays have won four of the last five games in which he has started, and he’s gone 5+ innings in all of the games the team has won in that span. He has also amassed a 1.323 WHIP and a 2.1 BB/9 this campaign and is seeing an uptick in his K/9 to a 9.2 mark.
Opponents have authored a .270 average and a .731 OPS this season to the tune of a .333 BABIP, and he ranks well with his command across the board.
Toeing the rubber for the Cardinals is Miles Mikolas, one of the veteran arms on the roster. He has spent the past seven seasons with the club and has made 30+ starts over the past three campaigns.
This season, Mikolas has authored a 3.96 ERA and a 3.67 FIP through 61 1/3 innings. The evening contest will be his 13th start of the season, and he owns a .1272 WHIP, 9.0 H/9, and an impressive 0.6 HR/9 this season, allowing just four home runs to date. The right-hander works with a five-pitch mix and the occasional sweeper and has been getting hard this season, ranking in the 29th percentile in barrel% (9.8%).
Mikolas gets opponents out via the fly-ball, producing a 31.7% rate compared to the 24.0% league average. He’s not a strikeout pitcher by any means (13.8 K%) and works across the zone to try and generate weak contact.
Lineup-wise, this is the first game all season where Vladimir Guerrero Jr. is not pencilled into the starting lineup. Ernie Clement will start at first. Addison Barger gets the nod at third and takes Guerrero’s spot in the order while Kirk moves up to the three-hole. George Springer will be the DH.
