George Springer’s health is up in the air.
In Game 3 of the World Series against the Toronto Blue Jays and Los Angeles Dodgers, Springer took a mighty hack in the top of the seventh. Immediately after, he held his right side of his back, and was pulled almost immediately.
The game went on and became one of the second-longest World Series games in history, with the Dodgers eventually walking off the Jays. However, the Jays received some news after the game, as numerous sources reported that Springer left with right side discomfort and is out day-to-day.
Losing Springer for any period of time will be a big blow for the Blue Jays. This postseason, the designated hitter is slashing .246/.323/.561 with four home runs in 65 plate appearances and has been a staple at the top of the Blue Jays lineup.
If you recall, Springer was also removed from Game 5 of the American League Championship Series, as he was hit in the knee with a 96 mph fastball. Thankfully, Springer returned the following game and hit that massive Game 7 home run to send the Jays to the World Series.
Hopefully, the same happens entering Tuesday’s Game 4. It appears as if it’s a look-and-see type of situation. If Springer can’t go on Tuesday, Bichette will likely slide to the designated hitter role, with an undetermined lead-off hitter.
What could be a bigger issue is if Springer can’t return to the postseason. That would require the Blue Jays to request to make a roster move (as they did with Anthony Santander). Joey Loperfido is the obvious replacement, but since the Jays are carrying 14 position players, that means they only have 12 pitchers on the roster.
If the Jays have to remove Springer from the playoff roster, it would allow them to add a pitcher, which is needed considering Monday evening’s game went 18 innings, with the Jays using every single reliever in the bullpen.
That said, hopefully the Jays get some good news ahead of Tuesday’s Game 4.
