On the eve of Opening Day (at least north of the border), the Toronto Blue Jays received promising injury updates regarding a trio of starting pitchers.
Speaking to local media members during Thursday’s workout day at the Rogers Centre, general manager Ross Atkins revealed that both Shane Bieber (forearm) and José Berríos (elbow) are scheduled to throw off a mound at the player development complex in Dunedin, Fla., this week.
It’s an important benchmark for Bieber, who had previously been limited to throwing on flat ground from 120 feet prior to this recent development. There still isn’t a timeline for his return. But now that he’s been cleared for mound work, it’ll be much easier to begin mapping out his starter’s build-up from here.
Berríos, meanwhile, continues to operate pain-free despite being diagnosed with a stress fracture in his right elbow last week. As long as that remains the case, the 31-year-old starter — who was placed on the injured list on Wednesday along with Bieber, Trey Yesavage, Yimi García and Anthony Santander — will be able to continue pitching through this ailment.
Separately, Atkins described Yesavage’s latest outing at the PDC from Wednesday as “encouraging,” adding that his velocity “bumped back up” compared to his earlier starts in simulated games this spring.
Yesavage (shoulder) will be in Toronto for Opening Day festivities over the next few days before returning to Florida, and he could be aiming for 45 pitches over three innings in his next appearance, according to manager John Schneider. Those plans aren’t yet official, though.
Today’s Blue Jays minor league intrasquad starting pitching matchup? Max Scherzer vs. Trey Yesavage.
At the moment, Berríos figures to be the furthest along of these three, considering he topped out at 63 pitches during his final Grapefruit League appearance on Mar. 6 before being shut down for a few weeks. Barring any setbacks, there’s a chance he could be the first injured starter to rejoin the Blue Jays’ rotation once he’s fully stretched out.
Toronto’s staff will be in good hands until then, with Kevin Gausman, making his first Opening Day start for this franchise on Friday versus the Athletics, as well as Dylan Cease, Eric Lauer, Cody Ponce and Max Scherzer.
