His time with the organization was brief, and now Jack Cushing has found a new short-term home in Korea.
Per a media release from the Hanwha Eagles, Cushing is replacing the injured Owen White on a 6-week deal worth $60,000 USD, with incentives potentially pushing the deal to $90,000 total. The KBO only allows teams to have three foreign players per squad, with a max of two pitchers.
A 22nd-round pick of the Athletics in 2019, Cushing has spent the past six seasons in the organization’s minor league system.
The 29-year-old right-hander reached Triple-A in 2022 and has floated between the highest minor league level and Double-A without reaching the big league level over the past few years. A starter for most of his career, the Athletics converted him more to a reliever in 2023, and he’s only made a handful of starts since then. In 2025, Cushing posted a 6.67 ERA with 59 earned runs allowed across 79 2/3 innings with a 1.594 WHIP.
For his minor league career, Cushing posted an 8.6 K/9 with 538 punchouts across 565 1/3 innings.
Cushing signed a MiLB deal with the Toronto Blue Jays just before Spring Training and entered camp looking to secure a spot on the big league roster. Across two relief outings this spring, Cushing allowed three hits, one earned run, and one walk while striking out three. He would be released in mid-March, as he had an opt-out in his deal and wasn’t going to be making the team.
With this new deal, Cushing is looking to impress in the short-term in the hopes of either impressing enough for another deal overseas or potentially finding a new home stateside when his temporary deal is over. Per the Eagles, Cushing is expected to land in Korea tomorrow and could be pitching for the team by next weekend. He joins former Blue Jays southpaw Hyun Jin Ryu on the Eagles’ pitching staff.
