The Toronto Blue Jays have drafted another college senior.
With the ninth-round pick, the Blue Jays selected Southern Mississippi’s Joey Urban, a right-handed batting outfielder that stands at 6’0”, 190 lbs.
As expected, Urban is unranked on MLB Pipeline’s top draft prospect list. His past two seasons have been spent with Southern Mississippi, including the 2026 season where he slashed .320/.426/.574 with 15 home runs in 294 plate appearances with the Gold Eagles. Urban was named as the Sun Belt Conference Tournament’s Most Outstanding Player.
Urban finished the year with a 137 wRC+, with a great 12.9 BB% and fantastic 13.9 K%. It was a similar season to his 2025, also with the Gold Eagles. That season saw him slash .333/.417/.552 with nine home runs in 204 plate appearances, but he finished that season with a 20.1 K% and 10.3 BB%.
The right-handed batting outfielder began his collegiate career with Butler in 2023. He spent two seasons there, and for his four-year college career, Butler slashed .319/.405/.524 with 36 home runs in 998 plate appearances.
Like a handful of other senior signings, this will likely be a money-saving selection. The slot value for this pick is $202,100, but since he’s a collegiate senior, he’ll likely be signed for less so the Jays can sign Will Brick or any other high school players they select later in the draft.
The Blue Jays next pick is the 312th overall pick in the 10th round, before the draft takes an hour break.
