The Toronto Blue Jays stayed with the college route with their second pick on Sunday during day two of the 2026 MLB Draft.
With their sixth-round selection, 193rd overall, the Blue Jays selected infielder Gable Mitchell from the University of Iowa.
The Iowa City native is coming off his fourth season at the University of Iowa, and he put together his strongest season to date. Through 56 games, Mitchell batted .360 with five home runs and 43 RBIs, and reached base at a .452 clip.
The Hawkeyes’ shortstop from this past season is listed at 5-foot-9, 185 pounds and brings a speed element to his game as the 22-year-old picked up 14 steals in 18 attempts during his final season in the Big Ten.
During three Big Ten Tournament games, in which the Hawkeyes went 1-2, Mitchell went 1-for-8 with one RBI, one walk, and two runs scored. Stated to have a high baseball IQ, Mitchell’s profile probably fits more at second base due to arm strength and range.
Over four seasons with the Hawkeyes, Mitchell batted .318 with 14 home runs and 135 RBIs. Mitchell turned in a career on-base percentage of .414 and stole 28 bases in his 37 attempts. The slot value for this selection is listed at $330,300, and the Blue Jays will likely be paying underslot for the fourth-year senior.
