Game 3 of the World Series is a pivotal one for the Toronto Blue Jays.
They defeated the Los Angeles Dodgers 11-4 on Friday, but the Dodgers fired back with a 5-1 victory on Saturday to split the first two games. The series has shifted to L.A. for the next three games, with Monday’s pitching matchup being against Max Scherzer of the Blue Jays and Tyler Glasnow of the Dodgers.
Scherzer, 41, is a guaranteed first ballot Hall of Famer. The right-handed pitcher is a three-time Cy Young winner, an eight-time All-Star, and has won two World Series in his career, both coming within the last six seasons.
Toronto is Scherzer’s seventh stop in his illustrious career, having pitched for the Arizona Diamondbacks, Detroit Tigers, Washington Nationals, Dodgers, New York Mets, and Texas Rangers.
Thanks to the success of the Nationals in the mid-to-late 2010s, as well as spending a few months with the Dodgers, Scherzer has pitched three games at Dodger Stadium. He has also faced them a handful of times, with two of those appearances coming at home.
Let’s take a look at how Scherzer has performed at Dodger Stadium in the playoffs.
Max Scherzer at Dodger Stadium
Although the Nationals faced the Dodgers in the 2016 National League Championship Series, Scherzer started Games 1 and 5 in Washington.
Scherzer’s first appearance in the postseason at Dodger Stadium came out of the bullpen in 2019. Three days prior, Scherzer started against the Milwaukee Brewers in the National League Wild Card Game, going five innings with three earned runs allowed. Scherzer didn’t struggle against the Dodgers in his first game in L.A., striking out all three batters he faced in the eighth inning.
That was the first and only time Scherzer has pitched at Dodger Stadium as an opponent. His next start at Dodger Stadium came in Game 1 of the NLWC in 2021. Acquired by the Dodgers from the Nationals before the 2021 trade deadline, Scherzer made his first start at Dodger Stadium against the St. Louis Cardinals
The veteran went four and one-third innings, giving up an earned run, three walks, and four strikeouts in an eventual victory. He was tagged with a loss in his final outing at Dodger Stadium in Game 3 of the NLDS, giving up an earned run in seven innings of work, striking out 10 and allowing a walk. The Dodgers fell 1-0, but eventually won the series.
Overall, Scherzer has made three appearances at Dodger Stadium, giving up two earned runs, walking three, and striking out four. In those 12.1 innings, he has a 1.46 ERA, 34.7 K%, and 6.1 BB%.
In what could be the last big league outing of his career, Scherzer needs to have an excellent start against his former team. With a win, the Blue Jays would, at worst, return to Toronto for Game 6.
