Blue Jays Minor League Musings: Jake Casey hits 12th home run of the season

Jake Casey is quickly becoming one of the Toronto Blue Jays’ best power-hitting prospects.
Son of Major League Baseball All-Star Sean Casey, the Blue Jays selected J. Casey in the 15th round of the 2025 draft. When healthy, he has torched lower-minor pitchers, which includes the outfielder hitting his 12 home run of the season on Saturday evening.
Overall, the 23-year-old registered two of the High-A Vancouver Canadians’ five hits, his third consecutive multi-hit game. On Friday, he went 2-6 with a double and went 3-5 with a double and a triple on Thursday. Since joining the Canadians on June 23rd, Casey is slashing .251/.377/.519 with 11 home runs in 223 plate appearances, with an 11.2 BB% and 27.8 K%. Casey all won the Northwest League’s Player of the Week just two weeks ago.
All Casey has done since becoming a professional is hit home runs. Joining the Single-A Dunedin Blue Jays to finish the 2024 season, Casey hit three long-ball in 82 plate appearances, all while batting .281/.439/.531. He then made a mark in Spring Training, hitting a home run in his eight plate appearances.
Ultimately, the Canadians fell 6-3. The other hitter who drove in a run was Dameury Peña, as he went deep for his first run since joining the Blue Jays’ organization via trade. Gable Mitchell and Bryce Chane had the other two hits, both singles.
With the loss, the C’s only have a half game cushion over the Eugene Emeralds for top spot in the Northwest League standings. However, the Emeralds won the first half, meaning the C’s have a three game cushion over the Everett AquaSox. With just seven games remaining, the C’s magic number to head to their fourth NWL Championship Series in the last five seasons sits at four.
The Triple-A Buffalo Bisons gained some ground on Saturday, defeating the International League East-leading Rochester Red Wings by a score of 6-1. Davis Schneider hit a three-run home run in the first, as the Bisons put up a four spot before the home team even had a chance to bat.
Schneider was one of three players who had a multi-hit game, as he also hit a double. Yohendrick Piñango hit his 14th Triple-A double in a two-hit effort, while Ismael Munguia hit his ninth double at the level in a three-hit game. Carlos Mendoza also hit a double.
The Bisons’ pitching staff had a solid outing as well. Austin Marozas struck out five in three and one-third innings of one-run ball. Ricky Tiedemann struck out two in an inning and two-thirds, while both Pat Gallagher and Chase Lee struck out four. Gallagher was credited with a win thanks to two and one-third clean innings and Lee struck out four in an inning and two-thirds.
Although the Double-A New Hampshire Fisher Cats fell 6-4, their pitching broke a franchise record with 20 strikeouts. Nolan Perry had seven of them in four innings of two run ball, Alex Amalfi struck out five in two innings of two run ball, Gage Stanifer struck out six in two innings of one run ball, and Yondrei Rojas struck out two in an inning of one-run ball.
The lone home run by the Fisher Cats belonged to Edward Duran, his first home run at the level. Alexis Hernandez, Eric Snow, J.R. Freethy, Cutter Coffey, and Dub Gleed each hit a double. Gleed is now batting .288 after a two-hit performance, one of three players to have two hits in this one. Hernandez and Mathieu Vallee were the other two.
