It’s settled, the Toronto Blue Jays will face the Seattle Mariners in the 2025 American League Championship Series.
After a gruelling 15-inning slugfest, the Mariners pulled out a walk-off win against the Detroit Tigers, setting up a rematch of the 2022 American League Wild Card Series. That series didn’t go well for the Jays, as their offence was shut down in the series opener, and they blew an 8-1 lead in the second game.
The good news for the Jays is that this is a much different team. Back in 2022, the Jays’ offence relied on small ball with strong pitching. While they still have small-ball tactics, their offence is much more well-rounded with the ability to hit home runs, while their pitching is arguably worse than it was three seasons ago.
As for the Mariners, they have a strong pitching staff, featuring Luis Castillo, Logan Gilbert, George Kirby, Bryce Miller, and Bryan Woo, who could return for the Mariners in the ALCS. It’s worth noting that Kirby (66 pitches), Gilbert (34 pitches) and Castillo (15 pitches) all appeared in Game 5 against the Tigers.
In the regular season, the Blue Jays won the season series 4-2. It isn’t all that important, as the most recent matchup between the two teams took place on May 11. What’s funny is that after winning the first game against the Mariners on April 18, the Jays went on a 3-12 stretch over their next 15 games. They won on May 8 to salvage a series against the Los Angeles Angels, before sweeping the Mariners in a three-game series, returning to .500 play.
Later that month, the Jays would finally get rolling, and the rest is history. That was then, but all that matters is the present day. Game 1 is on Sunday in Toronto with a start time of 8:03 PM ET. Both teams’ pitchers are to be determined, but Seattle’s starters are going to be rather tired after Friday evening’s marathon. Game 2, also in Toronto, has a start time of 4:38 PM ET or 5:03 PM ET, depending on Saturday’s result in the National League.
The series will shift to Seattle for at least two games, with the first game coming on October 15 and Game 4 coming on October 16. If necessary, Game 5 is on October 17, before the Jays host Game 6 (October 19) and Game 7 (October 20).
It’s an exciting time to be a Blue Jays fan.
