Toronto Blue Jays pitcher Hyun-Jin Ryu underwent Tommy John on Friday, the club said Saturday.

The surgery is expected to keep him out of the lineup for anywhere from 12-18 months effectively ending the four-year deal he signed when he joined the club ahead of the 2020 season.

Over the course of his three years, he started 49 games posting a 21-12 record, a 4.07 ERA and a 1.217 WHIP. In those 49 games, the Jays went 32-17. His most successful season came in that first year of the deal where his 2.69 ERA, among other stats, put him third in the AL Cy Young voting.

While Ryu’s injury puts the Jays in a bind when it comes to their rotation this year, his arrival in Toronto helped to signify to other stars that the Blue Jays were a team on the up and up. Who knows, without Ryu the Jays maybe wouldn’t have been able to lure stars like Marcus Semien and George Springer in 2021.

There had always been durability concerns when it came to Ryu, but this is a tough way for things to end.
