Amid a full day of baseball, the Toronto Blue Jays have added some fresh arms for the second half of Wednesday’s doubleheader at Camden Yards.

Prior to the day’s second first pitch against the Baltimore Orioles, the club announced a series of roster moves, placing Dylan Cease (right shoulder inflammation) on the 15-day injured list, recalling right-handers Chase Lee and CJ Van Eyk from Triple-A and optioning José Rodríguez to their spring training complex. 

Van Eyk has been announced as Toronto’s starting pitcher for the second of two games versus the O’s.

With Cease heading to the IL, retroactive to Sep. 20, his 2026 season is now officially over. There was a chance he could pitch again during this weekend’s series against the Cincinnati Reds, but that was likely contingent on staying alive in the AL wild-card race by then. Since the team was eliminated from post-season contention in the first half of Wednesday’s doubleheader, it didn’t make sense to delay this decision any further.

The 30-year-old’s inaugural campaign as a Blue Jay concludes after 29 starts, ending a streak of five consecutive seasons with at least 30 starts. He finishes with multiple career-bests, including a 2.55 FIP, 34.9 percent strikeout rate, .179 OPP AVG and a 5.5 fWAR across 169 innings — exceeding last season’s total by one.

Fortunately, the Blue Jays already announced Cease won’t require surgery after this week’s MRI results didn’t reveal any structural damage to his shoulder. He should be 100 per cent recovered when spring training arrives in 2027.

This will be Van Eyk’s third stint with the Blue Jays this season, having already made four relief appearances during his first big-league campaign. Across 6.2 innings, the right-hander has allowed four runs (three earned) on 11 hits and two walks, while striking out one batter.

The 28-year-old has spent most of the ’26 season with Triple-A Buffalo, operating as a hybrid starter in 26 games (18 starts). He threw a combined 13 innings over his final two outings with the Bisons before their regular season wrapped up on Sunday, meaning he should be able to cover a considerable portion of the planned bullpen day in Game 2.

Lee also previously appeared with the Blue Jays, making seven relief appearances with the big-league club earlier this year. He’s surrendered seven runs (all earned) on eight hits — including three home runs — and eight walks thus far, posting just a pair of strikeouts.

Rodríguez, acquired in a minor-league trade from the Los Angeles Dodgers at the beginning of this month, flashed encouraging signs and an electric arsenal in his brief time with the Blue Jays, leading to 4.2 scoreless innings with zero walks and five strikeouts. The hard-throwing, unique-delivery righty won’t be eligible to appear again this season — barring an injury-related move — but will enter next year with two minor-league options remaining as intriguing bullpen depth.
