The Toronto Blue Jays’ roster shuffle continued Thursday.
Before the series finale against the Tampa Bay Rays, the Blue Jays announced that they recalled both Davis Schneider and Adam Macko.
Schneider returns to the big-league club after putting together a strong July in Triple-A with the Bisons. Across 15 games, Schneider batted .298 with five home runs and 13 RBIs, while reaching base at a .469 clip.
While the Blue Jays don’t need Schneider to bat .300, they need him to pose a threat to opposing teams that there is the chance he could run into one and change the course of the game with one swing of the bat.
Over 49 games with the Blue Jays this season, Schneider is batting .153 with three home runs and 12 RBIs. While most of those numbers are tainted due to a dreadful start, the 27-year-old looked better in his second stint with the club, a stretch that spanned June 12 to 26 when Schneider batted .222 with two home runs and four RBIs over 27 at-bats.
Macko is back in Toronto just five days after being optioned. Normally, a player would have to spend 15 days in the minors after being optioned, but Macko could return due to Patrick Corbin being placed on the 15-day injured list with a left teres major strain.
In 19 games (one start) with the Blue Jays this season, Macko is 2-0 with a 5.03 ERA and a 1.53 WHIP. The 25-year-old has struck out 21 batters over his 19.2 innings pitched, but has fallen on tough times as of late, highlighted by a 16.20 ERA across his four July outings.
To make room for Schneider, the Blue Jays optioned Sean Keys to Triple-A Buffalo. After bursting onto the scene with the Bisons this season, Keys was overmatched during his first taste of baseball in the majors.
In 12 games, Keys batted .167 with one home run and five RBIs over his first 36 career MLB at-bats. With a 35.1% strikeout rate, Keys will need to make more contact if he wants to become a mainstay in Toronto for years to come. If Keys can return to Buffalo and pick up where he left off, and the Blue Jays go down the route of selling, the 23-year-old has a high chance of returning to Toronto before season’s end.
As previously mentioned, Corbin was placed on the IL to make room for Macko. After signing a one-year deal in early April, Corbin pitched in 19 games (15 starts) with the club and went 3-4 with a 5.51 ERA and a 1.54 WHIP. Across 80 innings, the 37-year-old struck out 63 batters and allowed a .302 average.
