Over six years after he was draft, CJ Van Eyk is finally getting a call-up to the big leagues.
Before Sunday’s series finale against the San Diego Padres, the Toronto Blue Jays announced that CJ Van Eyk’s contract has been selected and he’ll be active for Sunday’s game. In turn, the Blue Jays optioned Chad Dallas to the minor leagues. Dallas pitched an inning on July 10th, and won’t be eligible to be called back up until July 27th.
Van Eyk was selected in the second round of the COVID-shortened 2020 draft. Signed by scout Brandon Bishoff, Van Eyk attended Florida State and began his professional career in 2021 with the High-A Vancouver Canadians. Over 19 games, he authored a 5.83 ER and 4.55 FIP in 80.1 innings of work.
The right-handed pitcher departed a late-August game with an apparent injury, which later turned into Tommy John surgery. Missing all of the 2022 season, Van Eyk returned in 2023 and threw 34.1 innings, with a 3.67 ERA and 4.72 FIP split between the Florida Complex League, Single-A, and Double-A.
Finally, Van Eyk pitched a full season, doing so in 2024 with the Double-A New Hampshire Fisher Cats. Over 95 innings of work, he finished the year with a 5.68 ERA and 4.62 FIP. Last season, he appeared in 27 games, making seven starts with the Fisher Cats and appearing in 20 games with the Triple-A Buffalo Bisons.
Overall, he had a 4.79 ERA and 5.17 FIP over 126 innings of work, while his K% sat at 19.7% and BB% at 9.2%. He’s improved this season, throwing 78.1 innings of work with a solid 3.79 ERA and 4.22 FIP over 17 outings.
Aside from his debut season, Eyk has never been a big strikeout arm, and that’s carried into this season as well. With the Bisons, Van Eyk has a 17.1 K%, though his BB% dropped to 7.6%, the lowest of his career. Instead, Van Eyk relies on soft contact with a six-pitch mix.
It’s been a long time coming, but it’ll be nice to see Van Eyk make his debut.
