The Toronto Blue Jays are getting some help both offensively and in the bullpen.
On Friday afternoon, shortly before the series opener against the St. Louis Cardinals, the team announced that both Braydon Fisher and Jesús Sánchez have been activated, while Adam Macko and Yohendrick Piñango have been optioned.
Sánchez has been out of the lineup for over a month after suffering a right ankle sprain on June 26th against the Texas Rangers. When healthy, the outfielder has been somewhat productive, slashing .274/.316/.437 with seven home runs in 234 plate appearances for a 108 wRC+. That said, his defence hasn’t been very good.
Still, it’s a bat that’ll help a Blue Jays’ offence that has struggled for most of the year, but especially after the All-Star break. The 28-year-old looked solid in his rehab outings, mustering four hits over 16 plate appearances.
To make room for Sánchez on the 26-man roster, the Jays optioned Piñango. His production has waned after a hot start to his career, as the 24-year-old is now batting .260/.306/.396 with five home runs in 180 plate appearances. In this brief stint from July 22nd until July 29th, the outfielder finished with four hits, one double, and had a 35 K%.
This is the fourth time Piñango has been optioned this season. An option year allows a player to be optioned five times, but if a team wants to get them off their 26-man roster for a sixth time, that requires the player to go through waivers. Just something to monitor once the Jays begin their sell-off.
Fisher hasn’t pitched since July 26th as he was placed on the bereavement list, taking the place of Macko on the 26-man roster.
This is also Macko’s fourth time being optioned. The Slovak lefty had a tough July, surrendering 10 earned runs over just seven and one-third innings, a 12.27 ERA and 6.92 FIP. The Blue Jays have been cycling him, Chad Dallas, CJ Van Eyk, and Lázaro Estrada around all season. Right now, only Dallas is on the team’s 26-man roster.
