Max Scherzer is back.
Shortly before Wednesday evening’s game, the Toronto Blue Jays activated Scherzer from the 15-day injured, and the 41-year-old will make his first start with the club since April 24.
Scherzer was placed on the IL on April 27 due to right forearm tendinitis and left ankle inflammation. The forearm issue seemed to be plaguing Scherzer through the early portion of the season as he was forced to depart his second start of the season against the Los Angeles Dodgers due to forearm tendinitis after only two innings.
He ended up making only three more starts before the Jays placed him on the IL. Through five starts with the Blue Jays this season, Scherzer has a 1-3 record, 9.64 ERA and 1.61 WHIP over his 18.2 innings pitched. In his last start with the Blue Jays on April 24 against the Cleveland Guardians, Scherzer turned in a line of 2.1 IP, 6 H, 7 R, 7 ER, 3 BB, 0 K and was charged with the loss.
While working his way back from the IL, Scherzer made two rehab appearances in Triple-A with the Buffalo Bisons. In his two outings, Scherzer went 0-1 with a 4.05 ERA and 1.20 WHIP across 6.2 frames. Scherzer reached the 73-pitch mark in his most recent start on June 5, so he should be able to provide full length, assuming all goes well on the health side.
In his second outing with the Bisons, Scherzer averaged 93.4 MPH on his fastball and topped out at 95.7 mph, which is an encouraging sign, as the 93.4 MPH is a slight tick up from the 93 mph Scherzer had averaged through his first five outings this season. A healthy Scherzer, coupled with the return of Dylan Cease on Tuesday, gives the Blue Jays five healthy starting pitchers as they try to provide some relief to an overly taxed bullpen.
In a corresponding move to make room for Scherzer on the 26-man roster, right-hander Connor Seabold was designated for assignment. Seabold was acquired on May 27 from the Detroit Tigers in exchange for pitching prospect Juanmi Vasquez and was added to the active roster a day later.
Acquired as the Blue Jays dealt with a rash of injuries to their starting rotation, Seabold ended up appearing in five games with the Blue Jays and posted an 8.10 ERA and 2.40 WHIP over 3.1 innings with the club.
Seabold struggled with both control and the ability to miss opposing clubs’ bats during his brief stint with the Blue Jays. Opponents were able to hit .375 against him, and in his most recent outing, he was only able to record one out in the three batters he faced before being pulled in favour of Tyler Rogers, who was able to escape the situation without allowing an earned run to Seabold’s line.
For the season with both the Tigers and Blue Jays, Seabold is 1-0 with a 4.26 ERA and 1.58 across 19 innings, and with the need for pitching depth across the big leagues, Seabold figures to get another opportunity within another organization.
