After just one start since his return, the Toronto Blue Jays have placed Max Scherzer back on the 15-day injured list.
Scherzer was set to start Wednesday’s game against the Boston Red Sox, but back spasms will keep him out of the rotation for at least the next 15 days. Braydon Fisher will start. Taking Scherzer’s spot on the 26-man roster is Chad Dallas, who has made one appearance in the big leagues so far in his career.
This is Scherzer’s second stint on the injured list, having missed nearly two months with right forearm tendinitis and left ankle inflammation. He returned last week in a start against the Philadelphia Phillies, striking out four, including his 3,500th career strikeout, but ultimately giving up five earned runs over his three and one-third innings.
It’s been a rough season for the future Hall of Famer, as he has a 10.23 ERA and 8.78 FIP over his six starts pitching into the fourth inning just twice this season. Both those starts happen to be quality starts, but he just hasn’t looked like the same pitcher he was at points during the 2025 season.
Dallas replaces Scherzer on the 26-man roster. He pitched the bulk of innings against the Atlanta Braves back on June 4th, allowing one earned run over three and two-thirds innings, striking out two and picking up his first big league win. So far in Triple-A, the right-handed pitcher has a 4.23 ERA and 3.39 FIP in 38.1 innings pitched.
It’s unclear if Dallas is in the Blue Jays’ plans against the Boston Red Sox on Wednesday evening. Fisher is set to start in what is now a bullpen game, but the Jays also have Simeon Woods Richardson and Spencer Miles who can eat some innings as well.
With Shane Bieber making a rehab start on Wednesday, it’s only a matter of time before he returns to the Blue Jays. Next Monday’s game against the Houston Astros is a possibility.
