Prior to Sunday’s series finale in Detroit, the Toronto Blue Jays placed reliever Tommy Nance on the 15-day injured list with right forearm discomfort.
Nance pitched one inning during Saturday’s 2-1 win over the Tigers, throwing a scoreless frame and striking out Tigers first baseman Spencer Torkelson. Nance was able to work around a one-out error by Vladimir Guerrero Jr. with the aid of catcher Tyler Heineman, who threw out Zach McKinstry trying to steal second.
The right-hander required 20 pitches (14 strikes) to get through his lone inning, but didn’t appear to be dealing with any obvious discomfort. Through 20 games this season, Nance is 0-2 with a 3.86 ERA and a 1.14 WHIP, punching out 25 batters over his 21 innings.
After struggling through much of April, a month in which Nance posted an ERA of 6.00, the 35-year-old has been much better in May. In six appearances, Nance has allowed only one run and held opposing teams to an average of .174.
In a corresponding move, left-hander Adam Macko has been recalled from Triple-A Buffalo and is active for Sunday’s contest. The Blue Jays’ 21st-ranked prospect according to MLB Pipeline, was acquired alongside Erik Swanson from the Seattle Mariners in exchange for Teoscar Hernández on November 16, 2022..
Macko, who attended Vauxhall Academy in Alberta, has spent the 2026 season working out of the bullpen with the Bisons. The left-hander posted a record of 2-2 with a 4.50 ERA and 1.17 WHIP across 18 innings with the Bisons. Macko has held opposing batters to a .203 average against and will give Blue Jays manager John Schneider a third left-hander in the bullpen.
The 25-year-old represented Canada at the World Baseball Classic for the first time in his career, pitching 2 1/3 scoreless innings, allowing three hits, one walk, and striking out four. Macko covered 1 2/3 scoreless frames during Canada’s 5-3 quarterfinal loss against the United States of America, striking out both Bryce Harper and Kyle Schwarber on off-speed pitches.
The first time Macko is tasked with jogging out of the Blue Jays’ bullpen will represent the MLB debut for the Alberta-native, growing the list of Canadians who have played for Canada’s lone franchise.
