With their penultimate pick in the 2025 amateur draft, the Blue Jays have selected Luke Kovach, a left-handed pitcher from California Polytechnic State University.
Kovach is a four-year junior pitcher. His Collegiate career began with Allan Hancock College in 2022 and finished the season with a 3.20 ERA while striking out 32.1% of the batters he faced.
Kovach was named to the first Team All-Conference. In 2023, he went 1-0 with a 4.91 ERA and 48 strikeouts over 29.1 innings in nine appearances, six of which were starts. At the end of the 2023 season, Kovach underwent Tommy John Surgery to repair a tear in his UCL.
He then transferred to Cal Poly in 2024 while missing the entire season rehabbing from surgery. Kovach got into game action late in the 2025 collegiate season, and in an extremely limited sample, he put up a 7.27 ERA across 8.2 innings while punching out 15 batters. His stuff consists of a fastball/slider/changeup, the latter of which is his best offering at the moment.
Kovach should be a relatively easy sign for the Blue Jays, and once that occurs, he likely starts in the Florida Complex League for a couple of outings before heading on up to Dunedin.
He will have a chance to start from the get-go with the fallback option of moving into the bullpen if his heater plays up in shorter stints.
