Did somebody say hedge pick?
With the 592nd overall pick, the Toronto Blue Jays’ 20th rounder, they selected outfielder Ty Peeples.
Standing at 6’2”, 185 lbs, Peeples ranked as MLB Pipeline’s 242nd-best draft prospect. A left-handed batter, he has a nice swing, with good bat speed and projection remaining in his frame. He’s not a perfect prospect by any means, as there are some whiffs in his swing, and the approach isn’t the best. Defensively, he’ll end up playing a corner outfield with solid arm strength. In terms of speed, Pipeline gives him a 45 grade.
It doesn’t seem likely that Peeples will play for the Blue Jays, though, at least not right now. The 18-year-old is committed to the University of Georgia, and he won’t sign unless one of their other deals falls through. This would presumably be either Blaine Bullard, Jordan Rich, or Jared Spencer.
It’ll be interesting to see what happens with the rest of Peeples’ career, but out of the 19 players the Blue Jays have drafted, he may be the only one who doesn’t sign with the Blue Jays.
