The Toronto Blue Jays completed their 2025 MLB draft selections but didn’t stop there. The club proceeded to replenish their farm system by signing various non-drafted free agents – one of those signees is homegrown prospect Sam White.
The Blue Jays have the luxury of selecting talent in their backyard, as the first look is usually done locally. A lot of Canadian prospects compete in travel-ball programs within the country, represent the country on the national level, and or advance to college baseball.
White did all of those things. He was born in Newmarket and attended high school in Aurora, Ontario. White started his baseball career with the Aurora Blue Jays. The infielder then took his talents to the Canadian Premier Baseball League (CPBL), playing for both Team Ontario and the Ontario Blue Jays.
Sam White advanced from the CPBL to representing Canada
White showed out as an elite-level talent early on in the CPBL, earning him an opportunity to play for the Junior National Team. The infielder was on the 2022 Baseball Canada Junior National Team WBSC U-18 Baseball World Cup.
White understands national pride. He levels his opportunity with the Junior National Team as prideful as professional ball, “Playing in the U-18 World Baseball Classic, I mean, literally representing Canada, that’s on top for sure,” said White, speaking to Blue Jays Nation. “I don’t think it really gets cooler than representing your country.”
A selection to the Junior National Team puts you in the professional spotlight of professional baseball. You get the opportunity to play against major league organizations as well as play in front of professional scouts. MLB scouts pay close attention to Junior National players. Who else does? NCAA Division 1 colleges.
White was ranked first as a third baseman in the Province of Ontario, and 32nd overall. He then committed to West Virginia, joining the Mountaineers.

West Virginia University produces Blue Jays
Alek Manoah and prospect Braden Barry are former West Virginia Mountaineers, with White recently joining the list. He attended the school in 2023 to compete in the NCAA’s Big 12 Conference. In three seasons, White finished with a slash of .310/.399/.483. He finished with 168 hits, 19 home runs, 111 RBIs, 14 stolen bases, and scored 117 times. His junior year held his best batting average, which led the team with .361, and he only struck out 23 times versus 22 walks.
White finished the season and was named to the ABCA All-East Region First Team as well as an All-Big-12 Honourable mention. White’s professional opportunity stemmed from a good showing as a Mountaineer.
White explained his time at the program, “We played some pretty damn good baseball when I was there; two super regionals, two Big-12 Championships. My freshman year, we had the most wins across all teams that season. This past year, we broke that record. Baseball was definitely on a different level these last three years. I think it shows kinda where West Virginia baseball is going. It’s going to be a nationally recognized powerhouse in the next five years, I think.”
Where does White project to play?
White spent time around the infield and outfield. He worked at third base, second base, catcher, and left field. He’s projected to be behind the dish in professional baseball and is expected to grow as a left-handed bat.
“Everyone was kind of interested in my bat. I think left-handed hitter, I can play anywhere on the field, and I project to be a catcher,” said White. The Canuck understands his game and his tools, and carries a deep passion for the game.
The Canadian prospect recently had surgery and is currently in rehab. He’ll hit the ground running in the months to come in development and the minors.
