The Toronto Blue Jays have added another member from their 2026 MLB Draft class to their organization.
On Saturday, Baseball America’s Carlos Collazo announced that the Blue Jays and Ryan Cooney agreed to a contract worth $597,000. The deal comes in at $165,400 less than the $762,900 slot value for the 103rd overall selection.
Taken in the third round, Cooney spent three seasons in the NCAA at the University of Oregon with the Ducks. Listed at 6-foot-0, and 195 pounds, Cooney spent time at second base, shortstop and third base during his three years at Oregon.
Last season with the Ducks, Cooney appeared in 60 games and batted .331 with eight home runs and 43 RBIs. The 22-year-old turned in a 10.8 BB% compared to a 11.9 K%, showcasing the tools that Cooney possesses at the plate.
Cooney entered the draft as the 137th-ranked prospect, and brings a speed element to his game. Per MLB, Cooney’s speed received a 55 grade, and the infielder showed that off with 13 steals in his 16 attempts this past season.
In his three NCAA seasons, Cooney batted .312 with 20 home runs and 104 RBIs. Cooney finished with an on-base percentage of .415 and stole 28 bases in 34 attempts. Cooney’s size and bat ability make him likely to become a second baseman as he enters the professional baseball ranks.
Cooney joins Cole Carlon, Nolan Higgins, Gable Mitchell, Jake Bennett, Joey Urban, and Bryce Chance as players the Blue Jays have already signed from the 2026 draft. Eighteenth-round pick Jake McCoy opted to return to college, joining the University of Tennessee, and will not sign with the Blue Jays.
