Trey Yesavage has seemingly figured out the Double-A level.
The Toronto Blue Jays’ top pitching prospect pitched on Friday evening, coming out of the bullpen for the first time in his professional career. At the end of the day, the 21-year-old fired off five innings of two-run ball with nine strikeouts. This came on the heels of  Alek Manoah’s rehab start the day before.
Entering the game in the third inning, Yesavage struck out the first batter he faced. He got a flyout from Aidan Miller, before Carson DeMartini battled back from 0-2 down and hit a double on a 3-2 pitch. Thankfully, Yesavage got out of the inning with a flyout to right field.
Once again, Yesavage led off the next inning with a strikeout, generating two whiffs from Caleb Ricketts. After a flyout, Dylan Campbell hit a home run to make it a 3-2 game. Yesavage got out of the inning thanks to a groundout.
Out of any inning, the fifth inning (Yesavage’s third) was his best, as he struck out the side. All three of the strikes against the first batter were whiffs, followed by one whiff against the next batter, and two whiffs against Miller for his third, fourth, and fifth strikeout.
Yesavage struck out his fourth batter in a row to lead off the top of the sixth, using his fastball to get DeMartini swinging. Felix Reyes flew out, and Ricketts hit a double, the third extra-base hit of the game. Thankfully, Yesavage used a nasty splitter to strike out Paul McIntosh to end the inning.
Campbell was a thorn in Yesavage’s side in this game, as he led off the top of the seventh with a double. Yesavage struck out Leandro Pineda for his eighth strikeout of the game, but Campbell stole third and scored on a sacrifice fly to tie the game at three. The final pitch Yesavage threw was a fastball that caught the corner, his only caught looking strikeout of the game.
At the end of the day, the 21-year-old threw 89 pitches, 58 of which were for strikes. He also generated 21 swings and misses on 47 total swings for a 44.7 whiff%, a fantastic number. Yesavage hit 94 mph a handful of times, with his fastball reaching at least 95 mph per the broadcast.
After giving up three earned runs and a walk on July 6, Yesavage has returned from the All-Star break without giving up a walk. His July 26th start saw him pitch four perfect innings. On August 1, he pitched four innings, allowing a run but striking out nine. He went five innings with nine strikeouts and no walks in this one.
As noted earlier, this is the first time Yesavage has come out of the bullpen in his professional career. There’s a good chance that it’s to get him familiar with the role, as he could make his big league debut sometime in September. Per Sportsnet’s Shi Davidi, Yesavage is set to throw 90-95 pitches over six innings in his next outing. The question is, will it be in Double-A or Triple-A?
