The Toronto Blue Jays may get some starting pitching depth sooner rather than later.
On Thursday evening, Alek Manoah started his third rehab game, this time for the Double-A New Hampshire Fisher Cats. In total, he pitched three-plus innings, allowing two earned runs, three walks, one hit by batter, and two strikeouts.
In the first inning, Manoah generated a groundout from Aidan Miller for the first out. Carson DeMartini hit a single through the drawn-in infield and proceeded to steal second and third. However, Manoah got a pop-up and struck out Paul McIntosh to get out of the inning.
The 2022 Cy Young nominee wasn’t as lucky in the second inning. He got the first two outs thanks to a lineout and groundout, but then struggled with command. He walked Nick Dunn on four pitches and allowed singles from Leandro Pineda and Cade Fergus, the latter driving in a run. Manoah hit Miller in the head to load the bases (he’s okay), but got a forceout to get out of the inning.
He settled down in the third, striking out Felix Reyes to start the inning, then getting McIntosh to ground out. After a double by Caleb Ricketts and a walk from Campbell, he got Dunn to ground out to end the inning.
Manoah started the top of the fourth, but Pineda hit a double and Fergus walked to put the first two runners on. The right-handed pitcher was pulled for Geison Urbaez, who eventually threw a wild pitch that allowed Pineda to score.
Overall, Manoah generated six whiffs on 24 total swings for a 25 whiff%. Three of the six whiffs came in the third inning, his best inning of the evening, as Reading Fightin’ Phils batters took five total swings. It was the only inning where Manoah generated any type of swing and miss.
It was a good follow-up to the not-so-good second inning. There were five total swings in that inning, either getting an out or a hit. More worryingly, Manoah lost his command, throwing six consecutive balls. When he got back into the zone, he allowed back-to-back singles on 1-0 counts, before finally getting a called strike on a 1-0 count against Miller, just before he hit him with a pitch.
Unfortunately, Double-A doesn’t have statcast, which means it’s unknown how hard he was throwing. On the broadcast, it was noted he threw at least one fastball at 91 mph. Hopefully, that is on the lower end of his velocity from this game.
Trey Yesavage starts Friday’s game for the Fisher Cats.
