Toronto Blue Jays top prospect Trey Yesavage was back on the bump this evening for the Buffalo Bisons, and the right-hander was dialled in.
Returning to the mound as a member of the rotation, Yesavage was working on two days’ rest after throwing 1/3 of relief on September 7th. The Bisons were facing the Rochester Red Wings (Washington Nationals affiliate) on the road.
Yesavage started the game by striking out the side. He got leadoff hitter Jose Trena to chase an 84.1 MPH splitter in the dirt to get the first out on the board. Yohandy Morales and Nick Schnell met similar fates shortly after, with Morales chasing a splitter while Schnell couldn’t catch up to a high four-seam fastball, clocked at 95.3 MPH.
The second inning started with two flyball outs to Juan Yepez and Trey Lipscomb, respectively. Phillip Glaser would chase an outside splitter to ground out to shortstop Josh Rivera, needing 13 pitches to get out of the frame.
The third and final frame for Yesavage saw him strike out J.T. Arruda on three pitches, getting the switch-hitter to chase an inside slider. He then got catcher Francisco Mejia to ground out to second base before finishing his outing with a flyball out to left field, who was credited with the first two putouts in an inning before.
Yesavage would be lifted for Paxton Schultz, who carried the Bisons another three innings before Mason Fluharty and Joe Mantiply entered in relief. At the time of writing, the game was still in the bottom of the eighth inning, and the Bisons were winning 9-1.
It was a strong outing for the Blue Jays top-ranked prospect, who was bouncing back from a relief appearance that was marred by command issues. He didn’t issue a single walk this evening and pitched an 82.4% strike rate, an impressive feat through three innings and 34 total pitches. Yesavage was sitting between 93-95 MPH with his fastball, and the splitter was generating a ton of whiffs on the evening.
With this outing, Yesavage’s Triple-A ERA drops to 3.63.
