All good things must come to an end.
Vladimir Guerrero Jr. went 0-for-4 on Sunday as the Oakland Athletics won the rubber match of this weekend’s series over the Toronto Blue Jays by a score of 8-4. With that, the All-Star first baseman’s streak of consecutive games with a hit ended at 22, the sixth-longest in Blue Jays history.
Chris Bassitt got the start for Toronto and got hammered by his former club. The A’s batted around in the first inning and put six runs on the board thanks to a couple of two-run bombs from JJ Bleday and Zack Gelof. Bassitt settled down after that and only allowed one run between the second, third, and fourth innings. He finished the game with seven earned runs on eight hits and two walks with five strikeouts over four innings pitched.
Oakland starter JJ Sears didn’t allow a hit until the fourth inning when Daulton Varsho smashed a solo homer to right field. He continued mowing the Blue Jays down after that until the eighth inning when he lost his command and issued back-to-back walks to Spencer Horwitz and Davis Schneider.
Reliever Michel Otañez came into the game and allowed Horwitz to score on a double by Luis De Los Santos, the first RBI of his big league career. George Springer came up next and made the score 8-4 with a single. Daulton Varsho was hit by a pitch and Vladimir Guerrero Jr. came to the plate with an opportunity to extend both his personal hitting streak and the team’s late rally but he grounded into a double play to end the inning.
Up next… The Blue Jays will now hit the road for a three-game series in Los Angeles with the Angels. They’ll be off on Thursday and will then travel to Chicago to face the Cubs at Wrigley Field on the weekend.
