The Blue Jays are having a fantastic second day of the draft.
Although they didn’t grab a top 100 prospect this time, but they did pick a player who ranked much higher than the 214th overall pick. This time, they picked up shortstop Nick Goodwin.
The 21-year-old slashed .285/.394/.511 with 12 home runs in 274 plate appearances. Moreover, he had a 13.1 BB% and a 13.5 K% with Kansas State University in 2023.
Goodwin is more of a power-over-hit guy, as he hit 33 home runs in 770 plate appearances in his three collegiate seasons. He did improve his strikeout numbers in his junior year, as he went from 57 strikeouts in 247 plate appearances in 2022 to just 37 in 274 in 2023. He produces good exit velocities as well, an encouraging sign.

He may end up moving to second base, but he has a strong arm and good actions to stay in the infield. He is also an average runner.
He ranks as Baseball America’s 138th best draft prospect, and MLB Pipeline’s 163rd best draft prospect, good value for the 214th overall pick. Here are his grades according to the two publications.
Tool | Baseball America grades: | MLB Pipeline grades: |
Hit | 40 | 45 |
Power | 50 | 45 |
Run | 50 | 45 |

The next Blue Jays pick is the 244th overall pick.
