There was some trade activity on Friday.
One trade target for the Toronto Blue Jays is off the board, while their rival, the New York Yankees, acquired a third baseman. Starting with the former, the Baltimore Orioles traded Gregory Soto to the New York Mets for Wellington Aracena and Cam Foster.
This is the second consecutive year that Soto was traded shortly before the trade deadline, as the Philadelphia Phillies traded him to the Orioles before the 2024 trade deadline. So far this season, Soto has a 3.96 ERA and 3.28 FIP in 36.1 innings pitched, with a 27.5 K% and an 11.3 BB%.
Throughout his career, the flame-throwing left-handed pitcher has struggled with command and control, as evidenced by his career 11.9 BB% over seven seasons. Soto isn’t a bad pitcher by any means, but there are plenty of better options out there for the Blue Jays.
Expect the Orioles to be busy before the July 31st trade deadline. Zach Eflin, Charlie Morton, Seranthony Dominguez, Félix Bautista, and Ryan O’Hearn are names that have popped up in trade rumours as of late.
The Orioles weren’t the only American League East team that made a trade on Friday, as the Yankees traded Griffin Herring and Josh Grosz to the Colorado Rockies in exchange for Ryan McMahon.

That’s a significant package for the third baseman, as Herring was the Yankees’ eighth-best prospect, and Grosz was a top 20 prospect in the farm system. Offensively, McMahon has always been a sub-100 wRC+ type of player, with his best wRC+ of 97 coming in 2022.
There is some pop in his bat, as the third baseman tends to hit 20-25 home runs a season, already having 16 so far in 2025. This year, he’s slashing .217/.314/.403 in 401 plate appearances for an 89 wRC+. His only All-Star appearance came last season, albeit the Rockies didn’t really have anyone else All-Star worthy.
What McMahon is known for is his defence at the hot corner. In 824 innings at third base, McMahon has 4 Defensive Runs Saved and 4 Outs Above Average. Two seasons ago, in 2023, he had 17 DRS and 12 OAA, finishing as a finalist for the National League Gold Glove at third base. For his career, he has 64 DRS and 45 OAA.
