The New York Yankees have signed a former highly touted prospect in the Toronto Blue Jays system.
On Sunday evening, Ari Alexander reported that the Yankees have signed Adam Kloffenstein, to minor-league deal with an invite to Spring Training. It’s worth noting that the Yankees’ transaction log has this signing become official on Dec. 19.
Kloffenstein has spent most of his professional career with the Blue Jays. He was their third-round pick in the 2018 drafted out of Magnolia High School. The right-handed pitcher had a strong 2019 season, his first full season as a professional, but struggled over the next two seasons.
In 2013, Kloffenstein began his season with the Double-A New Hampshire Fisher Cats, posting a 3.24 ERA and 3.47 FIP in 89 innings pitched, with a 27.6 K% and an 8.9 BB%, the best he had looked since 2019. However, he and Sem Robberse were traded to the St. Louis Cardinals for Jordan Hicks ahead of the 2023 trade deadline. This was one of three trades these two teams made in short succession.
Kloffenstein finished the 2023 season posting a 3 ERA and 5.78 FIP in 39 innings pitched with the Cardinals’ Triple-A team. The 2024 season saw Kloffenstein make his big league debut during the MLB at Rickwood Field game in June, but pitched just one inning. Most of his 2024 season was spent in Triple-A, where he had a 4.74 ERA and 5.51 FIP in 89.1 innings pitched.
Last off-season, Kloffenstein signed a minor-league deal with the Jays, posting a 6.26 ERA and 6.30 FIP in 82 innings pitched while also finishing the season with a 23.9 K% and an 11.7 BB%.
Kloffenstein isn’t the first Blue Jays’ farmhand the Yankees have signed this off-season. On Dec. 13, they signed catcher Payton Henry to a minor league deal. Henry spent a season in the Jays’ system, playing 27 games with the Bisons. Additionally, the Yankees signed Ali Sánchez on Dec. 17, with the catcher playing a handful of games with the Blue Jays in 2025.
