There are still more transactions to be made as the season winds down into the single digit games remaining. After getting DFA’d earlier by the Yankees, the Blue Jays have claimed RHP Ryan Dull off waivers.
The 29-year-old righty has a total of 170 MLB innings of experience, mainly on the Oakland A’s before making an extremely quick stop in New York. This season, he has a 13.50 ERA through only 11 and 1/3 innings.
His best year came in 2016, where he was able to maintain a 2.42 ERA through a career-high 74 and 1/3 innings.
In a corresponding move, lefty Tim Mayza has been placed on the 60-day Injured List after tearing his UCL mid-delivery a couple of games ago. As the tenured reliever awaits Tommy John surgery, Dull will most likely take his place in the bullpen for the remainder of 2019.
Dull has his pitched for a total of five different teams this year, in between the minors and MLB. As he heads to his sixth team, if the pitcher is able to have some impressive innings as the season dies down, there could be a 40-man roster spot and a place in the bullpen for him in 2020.
A lot would have to go right for the 29-year-old and a lot would have to go wrong for the young Blue Jays arms that should be closing in on a major-league debut or full-time position next year.
The bullpen and rotation will be an interesting place 12 months from now.
