After a great 2024 season, Josh Kasevich has struggled to stay healthy in 2025.
This is Blue Jays Nation’s annual mid-season prospect list, where we’ll take a look at the 50 best prospects in the Toronto Blue Jays organization. I’ll look at the player’s stats, what other publications have to say, as well as my own observations of the players.
Of any player in the Blue Jays’ system, Kasveich’s hit tool is the best. Paired with strong defence at shortstop, it’s easy to see how he ranks as our 17th-best Blue Jays prospect in the mid-season update. If you missed who ranked as our 18th-best prospect, you can read about Silvano Hechavarria here.
Getting to know Josh Kasevich…
Position: Shortstop
Bats: Right
Born: January 17th, 2001
Acquired: 2nd round, 2022 MLB Draft
Previous ranking: Ninth (2025 pre-season)
With their second round pick in the 2022 MLB draft, the Blue Jays selected 6’1”, 200 lbs shortstop Josh Kasevich out of Oregon State University. Joining the Single-A Dunedin Blue Jays to finish 2022, Kasevich slashed .262/.344/.336 with no home runs in 122 plate appearances.
The shortstop’s 2023 season was spent with the High-A Vancouver Canadians, where he slashed .284/.363/.365 with four home runs in 383 plate appearances for a 106 wRC+. He had a similar start to his 2024 season with the Double-A New Hampshire Fisher Cats, slashing .284/.333/.364 with three home runs in 393 plate appearances for a 102 wRC+.
Toward the end of the 2024 season, the Blue Jays promoted Kasevich to the Triple-A Buffalo Bisons, where he found success. In 173 plate appearances, the shortstop slashed .325/.382/.433 with three home runs for a 119 wRC+.
It looked as if the 2025 season was going to be a big one for the shortstop, but injuries have caused a stop-and-start type of season for him. In Spring Training, he had a stress reaction in his lower back, then he sprained his ankle, leading to three separate rehab stints. He hasn’t done particularly well with the Bisons in 2025, slashing just .135/.270/.135 with no extra-base hits in 63 plate appearances.
Kasevich ranked as MLB Pipeline’s 13th-best Blue Jays prospect in their mid-season update. He’s a leader and has good baseball IQ, two important factors you can’t teach. The shortstop’s best tool with the bat is his hit tool, which is graded 55, while his arm and fielding are graded at 55, meaning he’ll likely stay at shortstop. Unfortunately, power isn’t something that’ll be in Kasevich’s game consistently.
At the end of the 2025 season, Kasevich will become Rule 5 eligible, meaning the Blue Jays will need to add him to the 40-man roster to protect him. Due to his injuries, it’s also probable that Kasevich heads to the Arizona Fall League as he’s missed a large chunk of the season.
