The Toronto Blue Jays bolstered their pitching depth on Friday by signing veteran left-hander Patrick Corbin to a one-year deal.
This move comes just days after Cody Ponce suffered a sprained ACL in his season debut, consequently joining fellow starting pitchers Trey Yesavage, Jose Berríos, and Shane Bieber on the injured list. A group that started as eight men is now down to four.
Corbin, 36, has been one of MLB’s most reliable innings eaters over the last decade—his effectiveness during those innings has been suspect, though.
The 4.40 ERA and 1.365 WHIP he posted across 155 ⅓ innings with the Texas Rangers last season were both his best since 2019. His ERA sat 5.20 or higher in each of the previous four seasons before that, with him leading all pitchers in hits and earned runs allowed twice during that stretch.
Nobody should be expecting Corbin to be an ace. They probably shouldn’t even expect him to be average on the mound, considering he’s been well below that for years now. What they can expect, however, is for him to be available as he’s made at least 30 starts in every full season since 2017.
A rubber arm is just what the doctor ordered for the Blue Jays in the short term with so many starting pitchers sidelined. They’re running the risk of overworking their bullpen early, which could seriously reduce the effectiveness of their relievers later in the season. Trotting Corbin out there for five or six passable innings is better than exhausting everyone else with bullpen games, especially this early into the season.
How about long-term?
The most likely scenario for Corbin is that he’s optioned to the minor leagues once Yesavage and Berríos are back. However, he could find himself in the bullpen as a long man if he pitches well, perhaps piggybacking Yesavage while he builds up to full-length outings. Eric Lauer was first expected to handle that responsibility, but he is likely entrenched in the rotation.
So, if it’s down to Corbin or Lázardo Estrada for the role of the multi-inning guy, the Blue Jays will probably pick the 13-year veteran. Should the Jays wish to make some room by sending Corbin down to the minors, the veteran will need to agree to being optioned because of his service time, and he could decline, leaving the Jays and the left-hander to part ways later this summer.
A return to form for Corbin is unlikely but also not impossible. He’s an extreme pitch-to-contact guy at this point in his career, and the Blue Jays may believe his results will improve with their stellar defence behind him. His FIP has been lower than his ERA the last two years, suggesting some room for positive regression with a better cast around him.
With all that being said, the Blue Jays would probably like to use Corbin as little as possible this season. If he makes more than a few starts for this team, it means something has gone very wrong on the injury front. He is the Spencer Turnbull 2.0 for this club this season.
He is an insurance policy with extensive big league experience—desperate times call for desperate measures, after all.
