The knuckeball is heading to Washington.
Per the Blue Jays’ social media page, the Washington Nationals have claimed recently DFA’d right-hander Matt Waldron off of waivers. The Jays had previously claimed Waldron off of waivers back on August 5th after the knuckleball-throwing reliever was designated for assignment in late July.
Waldron’s time on the Jays produced mixed results.
The veteran hurler didn’t allow an earned run through his first two outings for the Jays, facing the Phillies on August 7th and 8th for two innings total. He walked one batter while striking out one, collectively.
For Waldron, the wheels fell off when the Jays returned home to face the Boston Red Sox, with the former Padre allowing three earned runs off three hits and one walk through just 0.1 inning of work. He struck out one, but failed to get through the ninth inning, with manager John Schneider calling on Louis Varland to clean up the mess.
Waldron’s next outing came against the Tampa Bay Rays, where he pitched to similar results. Through two innings of work, he allowed four hits and two earned runs in the eventual win for Toronto. The Jays would designate him for assignment the following day, calling upon southpaw reliever Brendan Cellucci for a fresh arm in the bullpen.
A four-year veteran in the big leagues, Waldron spent his entire career in San Diego before being DFA’d this past summer. For his career, including his stint with the Jays, he owns a 5.29 ERA and a 4.65 FIP through 229.2 innings, with San Diego using the Nebraska product as a starter in 2024 before moving him to a bullpen role shortly after.
The Nationals are currently in a tailspin, having lost eight of their last ten games and 14.5 games back of the NL East lead and 8.5 games back of an NL Wild Card spot.
