Tim Mayza is back from his stint on the Injured List and Zach Pop will be going down to Triple-A Buffalo to make room for him on the 26-man roster.
Mayza went on the 10-day IL a couple of weeks ago after he dislocated his shoulder during a loss to the Twins in Minnesota. At the time, the injury looked like it could have been very serious, as Mayza was rolling on the ground in pain, so it’s great to see him make his way back quickly.
Mayza has been excellent for the Blue Jays this season. He owns a 2.88 ERA over 34 1/3 innings pitched and he’s striking out 7.1 batters while walking 2.4 batters per nine. He’s also one of two left-handed pitchers the Blue Jays have right now, with Yusei Kikuchi being the other.
Pop, one of Toronto’s trade deadline acquisitions, is getting the short end of the stick here in simply because he has options, not because he’s been pitching poorly. Pop has made seven appearances for the Blue Jays, scattering two earned runs over six-and-two-thirds innings.
Next up, the Blue Jays will need to figure out how to make room for Julian Merryweather, who’s pitching well in his rehab assignment with Buffalo. Trevor Richards seemed like the name to jettison, but he has a sparkling 2.41 ERA over his 17 appearances since going on the Injured List back in June.
We might see the Blue Jays slow-play Merryweather until rosters expand come September because they don’t want to risk losing a quality arm like Richards on waivers.
