The Toronto Blue Jays’ post-All-Star break woes continued on Friday at Fenway Park.

The Blue Jays dropped the opening game of their three-game set 6-4 and now find themselves at 47-57 through 104 games played.

With only eight games remaining until the trade deadline, the path of selling is starting to feel inevitable as the club drifts further from playoff contention in the American League.

After the Blue Jays rallied from down 4-0, Romy Gonzalez slammed an RBI double off C.J. Van Eyk in the bottom of the eighth inning to bring home Jarren Duran to give the Red Sox a 5-4 lead. For good measure, Anthony Seigler followed with an RBI double of his own to push the lead to 6-4 and allow Aroldis Chapman some insurance for his 24th save of the season.

The unraveling in the bottom of the eighth inning spoiled a Blue Jays’ comeback attempt that saw them work their way back to tie the game at 4-4 after trailing 4-0 after six innings.

After Red Sox starter Patrick Sandoval worked through a two-out bases-loaded jam in the top of the first, their leadoff man Seigler wasted no time getting the Boston faithful into the game. Seigler launched the fourth pitch of the game from Blue Jays right-hander Trey Yesavage into the right field seats for his third home run of the season, and gave the Red Sox an early 1-0 lead.

Seigler once again led off the top of the third with a hit, which helped set the stage for Ceddanne Rafaela’s 10th home run of the season that snuck just over the yellow line on the Green Monster. Rafaela jumped on an 0-2 slider that worked its way back to the plate to give the Red Sox a 3-0 lead.

After working through a scoreless fourth inning, the manager was forced to pull Yesavage after he required 93 pitches to get through those frames. Yesavage finished his evening with a pitching line of 4.0 IP, 5 H, 3 R, 3 ER, 1 BB, 9 K, and his lone mistakes were the two home runs.

For the season, Yesavage has made 16 starts and is now 4-5 with a 3.92 ERA and 1.18 WHIP. The 22-year-old has struck out 87 batters over his 85 frames and has held teams to a .192 average.

Sandoval and reliever Tyron Guerrero combined to hold the Blue Jays off the board through six innings, but following Greg Weissert’s entry into the game, the lineup found life. Ernie Clement was hit by a pitch with one out before Vladimir Guerrero Jr. blooped a single to centre, setting the stage for Kazuma Okamoto.

Okamoto, who snapped an 0-for-24 slump with a double in the top of the fifth inning, made history by driving a first-pitch sinker from Weissert 408 feet to centre field for his 23rd home run of the season. The 23 home runs break Shohei Ohtani’s record for most home runs in a season by a Japanese-born rookie.

While he’s dealt with a few slumps this season, the 30-year-old has been a consistent power threat in the Blue Jays’ lineup, and over his 101 games he is batting .227 with 65 RBIs and a .759 OPS.

Andrés Giménez lifted a sacrifice fly that scored Nathan Lukes in the top of the eighth off of Garrett Whitlock, but the Red Sox’s late rally squashed what was the best effort the bats have displayed in weeks.

The Blue Jays will look to even the series on Saturday when they send Dylan Cease to the mound. The Red Sox will counter with Sonny Gray. First pitch is set for 4:10 p.m. ET at Fenway Park.
