Kazuma Okamoto has been named the American League’s Rookie of the Month for June, Major League Baseball announced on Friday.
The Japanese slugger is coming off his hottest month of the season, during which he slashed .286/.353/.560 with seven home runs, 20 RBIs and a 152 wRC+ (100 league average) in 25 games, worth 1.0 fWAR — leading all Blue Jays hitters in every category except for AVG. Colorado’s TJ Rumfield earned the National League honour.
Okamoto has been the leading force for Toronto’s inconsistent lineup during the first season of his four-year, $60 million contract signed over the off-season. Overall, he leads the team in home runs (19) and RBIs (53), and is on pace for a 35-homer, 100-RBI rookie season.
The Blue Jays have been kept afloat this season by a strong rookie class led by Okamoto, a position-player group that ranks third in the majors in fWAR (3.5), trailing only the St. Louis Cardinals (3.7) and Chicago White Sox (6.9).
While Okamoto has endured his ups and downs in the first half, the 30-year-old third baseman owns a pretty impressive stat line in his first major league campaign thus far, hitting .240/.323/.464 with a 119 wRC+ through 84 games, accounting for 2.0 fWAR. He leads all AL rookies in RBIs, ranks second in home runs and SLG, is tied for third in wRC+ and sits fourth in wRC+.
Okamoto has also far exceeded expectations in the field, recording five defensive runs saved across 718.0 innings at the hot corner, to the point that he’s only played 10.0 innings at first base — previously considered the position he was best suited for.
If he keeps this up, this may very well be his first of many AL Rookie of the Month awards through the rest of 2026.
