Both young starting pitchers in the Toronto Blue Jays’ opener of a six-game road trip have had strong UNDER trends at sportsbooks through the first third of the season.
The Blue Jays are the -125 away favorite (wager $125 to win $100) on the MLB odds for Tuesday night at sportsbooks monitored by OddsShark.com while the Baltimore Orioles are a +105 home underdog (wager $100 to win $105) with a 9.0-run total. Oriole Park at Camden Yards has hardly been hospitable to the Blue Jays, who are 8-12 in their last 20 visits to their American League East avian brethren since late 2016. Thirteen of those 20 contests have finished UNDER. The Blue Jays are also 6-14 in their last 20 away games.

Rookie Trent Thornton will face the Orioles for the first time in his career. The Blue Jays right-hander has been credited with a 1-4 record and a 4.73 earned-run average so far this season, but the total has gone UNDER in four of his six away starts. The Orioles will send out their most efficient starter, left-hander John Means, who is 5-4 with a 2.67 ERA. The total has gone UNDER in four of Means’ last five starts at home.
The total has also gone UNDER in eight of the Blue Jays’ 11 most recent away games, according to the OddsShark MLB Database, which is not surprising considering their season-long offensive struggles that see them rank 30th and last in MLB in on-base percentage (.284) and 28th in slugging percentage (.377). The Orioles, as a team, are 25th in getting on base (.297) and 24th in slugging (.400).
Wednesday, for want of better options, the Blue Jays will give the start to right-hander Edwin Jackson, who is 0-4 with a whopping 11.90 ERA in five starts since joining the team. The Orioles will counter with David Hess, who is 1-8 with a 7.08 ERA, so the chance of a bullpen night for each team seems fairly high.
Marcus Stroman will start for the Blue Jays in Thursday’s series finale and his 3-8 record belies a more-than-respectable 3.31 ERA, backed up by a 3.75 FIP (fielding-independent pitching). The total has gone UNDER in five of Stroman’s last six starts against Baltimore, which has not named a starting pitcher for the game on Thursday.
Following this series, the Blue Jays visit the Houston Astros for a three-game series.
