Trent Thornton’s track record against a team which is responsible for his ERA soaring north of 5.00 might override a strong UNDER trend for both teams on Thursday.
The Toronto Blue Jays are the +175 away underdog (wager $100 to win $175) on the MLB odds while the playoff-contending Tampa Bay Rays are -205 home favorites (wager $205 to win $100) with a 9.0-runs total for Thursday at sportsbooks monitored by OddsShark.com.
Blue Jays at Rays | OddsShark Matchup Report
The Blue Jays are 4-16 this season as a moneyline underdog of +170 or more on the road, while the Rays are 16-10 at home as a heavy favorite of -200 or deeper into minus money. The total has finished UNDER in 12 of the Blue Jays’ last 15 games as an away underdog of +170 or more, while it has gone UNDER in seven of the last 12 games when Tampa Bay was a home favorite of -200 or deeper into minus money.
Tropicana Field has often been a tough environment for the Blue Jays, who are 8-12 in their last 20 games against the Rays as an away underdog. The total has finished UNDER in 11 of those 20 games at online betting sites.
Thornton (4-9, 5.34 ERA, 8.5 strikeouts per nine innings) is confirmed to start for the Blue Jays on Thursday, while Austin Pruitt (2-0, 4.78 ERA, 7.9 SO/9) makes his second start of the season for the Rays. Saying that Thornton has struggled against Tampa Bay this season is an understatement, as he has allowed a .397/.453/.793 batters’ slash line with an 11.12 ERA in three starts. The Blue Jays are 1-4 in his last five starts when they were an away underdog and the total has finished OVER in all five.
Right-hander Clay Buchholz (1-3, 5.45 ERA, 4.5 SO/9) will start for the Blue Jays in Friday’s game, while the Rays have not announced a starting pitcher. Buchholz, a former Boston Red Sox pitcher, has a 2.62 career ERA in 144.1 career innings against Tampa Bay, and the total has finished UNDER in 15 of his 22 starts against the Rays. The total has also finished UNDER in four of Buchholz’s last six starts.
Neither team has named its starting pitchers for Saturday’s and Sunday’s games. Of note, frequent Blue Jays opener Wilmer Font (3-4, 4.42 ERA, 8.8 SO/9) has helped the total finish UNDER in six of his last seven starts when his team was an underdog on the road.
Following the series, the Blue Jays have Monday off prior to a six-game homestand against the Boston Red Sox and New York Yankees.
